Fiji
Widely considered to be one of the friendliest places on Earth, when you land in Fiji you are sure to get a warm welcome. This is a tropical paradise and if you are looking for perfect beaches, palm trees and clear waters then this has to be top of your list. The Fijian islands are known for beautiful sunsets, waterfalls, rainforests and great surf so it is not surprising that thousands of people head to Fiji for a holiday each year.
The country consists of more than 300 islands and you will find a wide variety of cultures here. European, Melanesian, Polynesian, Chinese and Indian can all be found here. English is a commonly used language so communicating with the locals is fairly easy. The attractions here are very colourful and if you want to indulge in a sporting activity or two then there will be something here to suit.
Getting from one island to another is fairly easy as there are plenty of boats and air shuttle services. Occasionally you do not have to purchase a ticket in advance and it is a comfortable way to travel. A plus point is that you do not have to pay any departure tax on internal Fiji flights.
Travelling within the islands by road is also possible. In most cases the main roads hug the coastline and the main roads are paved. You need to watch out for livestock, which is often allowed to wander freely and in many areas driving at night is best avoided. In some villages you need to drive slowly because the locals often walk along the roads. If you want to hire a car in Fiji then it is good to know that there are several international companies represented here but on most islands you should look to hire a 4x4 because of the quality of the roads. If your budget can take a bit of a stretch why not consider a limousine and driver instead of standard car rental? If you do want to drive yourself then you will need to have a valid licence and an international one would be accepted.
On the larger islands there are taxis and there are usually more taxis than are needed so finding one is not going to be a problem. Most will not use meters and make sure you agree on the fee for the journey in advance. If there is a meter you can ask for it to be switched on and the metered rate is usually cheaper.
